SteelSeries Apex Pro
The SteelSeries Apex Pro comes in a gaming keyboard scene which has not changed all that much from the past ten years or so. We have grown so used to Cherry MX mechanical switches and RGB lighting which everything kind of begins to blur together. The SteelSeries Apex Pro has changed that perception, at least for us.
This monster of a gaming keyboard not only comes with a robust and appealing form, with little to no wasted space but also new magnetic key switches which are user adjustable. You read that right: you are able to custom-tune that the actuation of nearly all of the keys on the keyboard, dialling in just how you would like your typing – and of course, gaming – experience to feel.
One of our main pet peeves when it comes to gaming keyboards generally is just how big they can get. You will always find those huge, foreboding slabs of plastic jutting from the sides of a great deal of keyboards. Fortunately, the SteelSeries Apex Pro averts this trend.
In reality, if it was not for the wrist rest, this keyboard could take up to as much space as your typical office keyboard – fortunately, the wrist rest is magnetically attached. We would not recommend removing the wrist rest, but as it’s covered in a soft faux-rubber material that’s remarkably comfortable. The wrist rest is generally something we abandon right away, but we are still using it together with all the Apex Pro.
The key caps are elevated over the keyboard deck, giving the keyboard a very contemporary and clean aesthetic. And, while they are made from plastic, they still feel robust and superior.
Above the number pad, you are likely to find an OLED display, a volume wheel which you could click into mute, along with a media key that will play/pause your music. This OLED display will let you set a customized image, or possibly a GIF, further boosting the customization of this keyboard.
At this time, this OLED display may be used to adjust settings such as actuation, lighting and OLED brightness without any mucking around in the software. In fact, once you’re correcting the actuation throughout the OLED screen, you can view a visualization of the quantity of force necessary for each numbered setting. There’ll be more performance coming to the OLED display later on, but that is all it could do now.
Around the back of the keyboard, you will find a USB pass-through. Not merely is the simpler to reach, but it’s illuminated, so it’s easy to find even during a late night gaming session. Obviously, since there’s a USB pass-through, this keyboard requires two USB ports for power.
And, clearly, there is RGB lighting around the SteelSeries Apex Pro, and it seems excellent. But at the time of writing, there is not much in the means of custom light setups. This keyboard features per-key illumination, but we can not assign our own bizarre light setup. The SteelSeries Engine software says more lighting options are coming soon, however, so it is only a matter of time.
We have used many gaming keyboards in our time, and we must say: that the SteelSeries Apex Pro might be one of the best yet.
Just imagine for a second: you are playing Overwatch, and you are always hitting your Ultimate on accident because you are way too clumsy. Together with the SteelSeries Apex Pro, you can simply adjust the actuation to your’Q’ key up into a 10, and you will only trigger that ability once you really mash on such key.
Long story short, this is among the most excellent gaming keyboards we have ever had the joy to use. And because pretty much everybody can listen to their own typing and gaming preferences, it’s easy to recommend the Apex Pro to anybody.
The SteelSeries Apex Pro is among the best gaming keyboards, even if not the very best. The custom made actuation, elegant form and bright RGB lighting help make it stand out among the dense competition.
It is somewhat expensive, but considering the keyboards, it must compete, it should be. In case you’ve got the cash, and you’re trying to find a premium gaming computer keyboard, the SteelSeries Apex Pro must absolutely be on top of your list.
The SteelSeries Apex Pro, using its custom made actuation, and comfortable magnetic buttons are among the best gaming keyboards on the market. And, when you put in the svelte glossy and aesthetic OLED display, it's easy to recommend to anyone.
